How to Buy a Computer on a Budget

Buying a computer is a big expense. You can pay anywhere from several hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on your needs. The more bells and whistles you need, the more it will cost.

If you’re on a budget, you may think you have to make sacrifices to get a computer you can afford. That’s not necessarily the case, however. You can buy a good computer on any budget.

Look for sales

Electronics go on sale right after the back-to-school season and immediately after the Christmas holiday season. That means computers do too, which is a great time to get a good deal. Monitor the store supplements, websites, and in-store promotions for the best deal.

Buy refurbished

Often you can find exactly what you’re looking for in a refurbished model. Like buying a factory-certified used car, many computer manufacturers offer an extended warranty on refurbished models. When researching refurbished models, ensure they come with a one-year warranty.

If not, don’t buy it. Shop smart. You can save several hundred dollars on a full-scale computer system when you buy a refurbished one.

Look for student discounts

Many computer manufacturers and software manufacturers offer discounts for students. If you’re buying the computer for a student or are, in fact, a student yourself, take advantage of this unique savings opportunity.

Evaluate your needs realistically

Yes, it’s nice to have the best computer on the market. But next month it’ll be replaced by a different computer. Trying to have the best is a bit of an expensive challenge.

Instead, evaluate what you need your computer to do. How much memory do you need? How fast do you need your computer to be? Video and audio requirements? What about software?

Make a list of your requirements and then evaluate computers based on that. If you still have room in your budget for a few extras, then you can add them based on priority.

Consider buying last year’s model

Many websites sell older models of computers. Because technology changes so quickly, models quickly become outdated. However, outdated doesn’t mean prehistoric. They are still quite capable of meeting your needs and are much less expensive than the newer models.

Additionally, you can negotiate a deal because stores are anxious to make room for their new inventory.

Don’t forget to search for online coupons and promotion codes when shopping for a computer. Take advantage of the holidays, older models, refurbished models, and a student discount if it applies. You can have the computer you need at a price you can afford.
